Q&A with David Byrne

Philbrook: How did Robert Rauschenberg end up creating a cover for the 1983 Talking Heads album, Speaking in Tongues?

David Byrne: I'd seen a show of some B&W photo collage pieces at Castelli just before that and I loved them- and I wondered if he might do a record cover/package- I may have then approached someone who knew him about the idea.... it may have been through Gemini, but I'm not sure.

Philbrook: When and how did you first come to know Mr. Rauschenberg?

David Byrne: I knew his work, of course, but we didn't meet until I approached him about this project. I had a suspicion he'd do something more than simply offer an image to be printed on a normal board sleeve. Typical of him, he questioned or re-thought the whole idea of how vinyl is packaged. He created an object, not just an image on a package. It even explicates how color separations work- if one takes the time to play with the thing. Sadly, it was a little too complicated to make every record sleeve a Rauschenberg- but Warner Bros records generously did a huge edition, which made it affordable for lots of folks.

Philbrook: This show focuses on prints made at Gemini G.E.L. Tell us a bit about your experiences working with them.

David Byrne: At some point I got to know Sidney Felsen and the Grinsteins- Sidney, Joanie, my ex wife and I would go out to dinner fairly regularly when I was in LA- we were just friends, I know some of the artists they worked with, but I wasn't a collector or anything like that.

Philbrook: You wrote a wonderful Op-Ed in the New York Times about Mr. Rauschenberg just days after his death in 2008. What do you miss most about him years later?

David Byrne: Bob had this great spirit and way of approaching things in completely un-preconceived ways, totally refreshing. For someone who'd seen it all he was completely non-cynical- or at least I didn't see that side. Even the way Bob talked- in puns, allusions and metaphors- was original.... though I do know a Brazilian musician, Tom Ze, who in this way and some others reminds me of Bob.

AN INTERN'S PERSPECTIVE: BEYOND THE ARTWORK

When people think of "Philbrook," they most likely think of the sprawling estate, filled with paintings and sculptures. One of my favorite parts of Philbrook however, lies beyond the Villa, in the expansive gardens.
The gardens of Philbrook are something I think everyone needs to experience. Not only are the grounds themselves gorgeous, but there are a number of magnificent pieces of art tucked away throughout the plants and trees. (Looks like the summer camp kids wanted to add their own contribution to the Hippo.)
There are a variety of water features spread out as well, from fountains to ponds to Crow Creek, which puts the "brook" in "Philbrook."
And of course let's not forget the wide variety of plants and animals that can be found all over the property.
Philbrook even has an herb garden, which is used by la Villa Restaurant in preparing some of their dishes.
So next time you're interested in spending some time outdoors, think of the (mostly) shady grounds at Philbrook as your ideal destination. In fact, spend some quality time in the gardens tonight at the movie on the lawn, "From Russia with Love," beginning at 7:30. Come join us!
