MEMORIAL DAY
It's Memorial Day and we remember those we've lost. From an artistic point of view, this date has some special meaning. On May 30th, 1640 Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens died at age 62. You'll be able to see work by Rubens this fall at Philbrook. More to come. What a tease!

Fountain Snake
This little snake, who's been spending an awful lot of time in our fountain, is becoming quite a local celebrity. At least one visiting student was heard exclaiming that it was "the coolest." Perhaps it's time to give it a name?

COMING SOON: DOORS OF NO RETURN
JUNE 5 - AUGUST 7, 2011
Strewn along the west coast of Africa stand the crumbling ruins of over 20 massive fortresses, or castles, which once imprisoned African captives. Tulsans Doug Henderson and Greg Merrell photographed the grim remains of these architectural sites in Ghana, Senegal, and Gambia during 2010, producing hundreds of haunting images.

HOGUE COMING HOME
You might have noticed recently that one of our signature pieces, "Mother Earth Laid Bare" by Alexander Hogue (1898-1994), has been missing. It was the featured piece in a Hogue retrospective at the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi. The show is going to travel, but this piece is coming home to Philbrook and will be on view again soon.
